Kangaroo 2020 – Junior (secondary years 1 and 2)

30 problems from the international Kangaroo mathematics competition (19 March 2020), Junior category, for the first two years of secondary school. The solutions are shown after checking.

Choose one of the five answers for each problem. Problems 1–10 are worth 3 points, 11–20 4 points and 21–30 5 points. A wrong answer loses a quarter of the problem’s points and no answer scores 0. You start with 30 points; the maximum is 150. In the competition the time is 75 minutes. When you finish, click Check answers.

8. Maria had ten pieces of paper: some squares and the rest triangles. She cut three squares along a diagonal. Then she counted the vertices of all thirteen pieces and got 42. How many triangles did Maria have before cutting? (3 points)

9. Martin made a kite by cutting a straight wooden rod into 6 pieces. Two of them, 120 cm and 80 cm long, are the diagonals of the kite. The other four pieces join the midpoints of the sides of the kite (picture). How long was the rod before cutting? (3 points)Figure for problem 9

10. In a grid of unit squares 4 points are marked (picture). We form a triangle with vertices at three of them. What is the smallest possible area of such a triangle? (3 points)Figure for problem 10

11. Elena wants to stay with her grandmother for 18 days in a row. Her grandmother reads her stories on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Elena wants to hear as many stories as possible. On which day should she arrive? (4 points)

12. If \(a,b,c\) and \(d\) are integers with \(ab=2cd\), which of these numbers cannot be the value of the product \(abcd\)? (4 points)

13. The shortest road from Atown to Cetown goes through Betown. Going from Atown to Cetown we first meet the signposts on the left, later those on the right. What distance was on the broken sign? (4 points)Figure for problem 13

14. An isosceles triangle has a side of 20 cm. Of the other two sides, one is \(\frac25\) of the other. What is the perimeter of the triangle? (4 points)

15. A number is written in each of the nine boxes in the picture so that the three numbers on each diameter add up to 13 and the eight numbers on the circle add up to 40. Which number is in the centre? (4 points)Figure for problem 15

16. Martha put a multiplication sign between the second and third digits of 2020 and noticed that \(20\cdot20\) is a perfect square. How many numbers from 2010 to 2099 (including 2020) have this property? (4 points)

17. Two different squares are drawn inside an equilateral triangle. One side of the smaller square lies on a side of the triangle, as in the picture. What is the angle marked with a question mark? (4 points)Figure for problem 17

18. Luke set off on a 520 km trip with 14 litres of fuel in the tank. The car uses 1 litre every 10 km. After 55 km he saw a sign with the distances to five petrol stations ahead: 35 km, 45 km, 55 km, 75 km and 95 km. The tank holds 40 litres and Luke wants to stop only once to fill it up. How far from the sign is the station where he should stop? (4 points)

19. Let \(17x+51y=102\). What is the value of \(9x+27y\)? (4 points)
