Problem 6 Length from the dot product

a) \(|\vec{u}| = 3\), \(|\vec{v}| = 2\) and the angle between them is \(60^\circ\). Find \(|2\vec{u} - 3\vec{v}|\).

b) \(|\vec{a}| = 5\), \(|\vec{b}| = 3\), \(|\vec{a} + \vec{b}| = 7\). Find \(\vec{a}\cdot\vec{b}\) and the angle between \(\vec{a}\) and \(\vec{b}\).

Show solution

a) \(\vec{u}\cdot\vec{v} = 3\cdot 2\cdot\frac12 = 3\). \(|2\vec{u} - 3\vec{v}|^2 = 4\cdot 9 - 12\cdot 3 + 9\cdot 4 = 36\), so the length is \(6\).

b) \(49 = 25 + 2\vec{a}\cdot\vec{b} + 9\), so \(\vec{a}\cdot\vec{b} = \frac{15}{2}\). \(\cos\theta = \frac{7.5}{15} = \frac12\), \(\theta = 60^\circ\).

Problem 7 Geometry with the dot product

Show solution

a) The median is also the altitude, so \(\vec{AM}\perp\vec{BC}\) and \(\vec{AM}\cdot\vec{BC} = 0\). \(\vec{AB}\cdot\vec{AC} = 6\cdot 6\cdot\cos 60^\circ = 18\).

b) Coordinates: \(A(0, 0)\), \(B(6, 0)\), \(C(6, 6)\), \(D(0, 6)\), \(E(3, 6)\). \(\vec{AE} = (3, 6)\), \(\vec{AB} = (6, 0)\): \(18\). \(\vec{BD} = (-6, 6)\): \(-18 + 36 = 18\).

b) \(\cos B = \frac{20}{40} = \frac12\), \(\sin B = \frac{\sqrt3}{2}\). Area \(= \frac12\cdot 5\cdot 8\cdot\frac{\sqrt3}{2} = 10\sqrt3\).
